Red Spruce Tonewood

A Tight Grain, Stiff and Lightweight Softwood

Currier Forest Products’ Vermont-grown, sustainably harvested Red Spruce Tonewood is used primarily for instrument making. Violins, cellos, upright basses, ukuleles, mandolins, guitars and just about every other stringed instrument you can name has some component made of spruce on it. However, the top is what spruce is most known for.

Luthiers know that the Red Spruce’s combination of tight grain pattern, high stiffness and relative light weight helps resonates sound beautifully. “It’s the Holy Grail of tonewoods,” and our diverse forests nurture trees with these premium qualities.

This type of wood is white to light yellow, with a variety of subtle brown, pink and red undertones.
