Spalted Wood

Eye-catching Wood Coloration Caused by Fungi

Our Vermont-grown, sustainably harvested maple, birch, and beech are custom milled for doors, tables and bowl turnings.

Spalting is a type of wood coloration caused by fungi. While primarily found in dead trees, spalting can also occur in living trees under stress. Although it may cause loss of strength in the wood, the unique coloration, and patterns of spalted wood are very sought after.

Both hardwoods and softwoods can spalt, but we generally see it in maple, birch and beech. Spalted wood from sugar maple is especially prized by furniture makers and artisans. Furniture makers and artisans often use spalted wood for distinctive door panels, table tops and bowl turnings.
